You left no abandoned toys
Or well loved blankets
To pack away.
No pictures to remember you by;
No name stopping short
On our lips.
We never even knew
You were here . . .
Until you were gone.

Harder this way, I know,
We have no memories
Of tiny hands
And sleepy afternoons
Curled up with me
In the chair.
We never had the joy
Of expecting your arrival,
Only the sorrow
Of discovering your departure.

For a moment,
There were five in my family.
Suddenly, we are four again;
